Get a kick from Caffeine!

Just use moderation

Most people need about six ounces of coffee to get a nice, manageable “alert” feeling.  Caffeine is the world’s most popular drug and too much can give some a real jolt.

Recently Northwestern University studied patients at the poison control center and found that many abuse coffee as a stimulant.  Many of the patients drank excessive caffeine and experienced a racing heart, hallucination, panic attacks and chest pains.  Emergency Room specialist’s are seeing a sizable increase in the number of teenagers who actually required hospitalization.

The problem is that people do not see caffeine as a drug, but as a food and use it to increase their energy levels.  Many patients said they take caffeine pills to get them maintain through the day.  Patients found without the pills they would fall asleep.

The poison control center said it is not that caffeine in itself is harmful, but the extreme dosage.

The problem is growing worse as coffee is promoted as a legal stimulant in colas and energy drinks, especially a new one called Cocaine Energy Drink recently on the market.  About 7.6 million or 31 percent of U.S. teenagers drink caffeinated colas.
